The Integral Role that Blood Sugar Plays in Your Health
Many people only think of blood sugar in reference to diabetes or hypoglycemia. The incidence of diabetes has risen year after year due to our quick fix food choices. Diabetes in itself is correlated to other diseases such as heart disease, cancer (colon, breast and prostate), blindness, amputations, neuropathy, obesity, pms, kidney disease, arthritis, kidney and gallstones to name a few. However, many of us have fluctuations in our blood sugar that can cause lasting effects on the quality of our health and life. Metabolic syndrome is a term that indicates blood sugar instability without having diabetic readings on a blood test. Some indicators for metabolic syndrome are:

Controlling blood sugar involves eating foods that are low glycemic. They are foods like whole grains, vegetables, fruits, lean proteins and healthy fats. High glycemic foods are those that flip into a sugar quickly in the blood. They are foods like white flour, sugar, white rice and other refined carbohydrates. Many prepackaged foods are high glycemic, contain trans fats, salt and preservatives. Studies have shown that those who eat a diet that focuses on lower glycemic foods and are rich in fruits, vegetables, fish and healthy oils like nuts and olive oil have less incidence of heart disease, cancer, diabetes and enjoy increased longevity. Studies have shown that people who eat a diet high in red meat, saturated and trans fat and refined carbohydrates tend to suffer more from hormonal imbalance, obesity, fatty liver, cancer and heart disease.
Changing ones diet is one of the most difficult things for people to do. However, with perseverance in making some simple changes to your diet by eating many fruits and vegetables, whole grains, healthy fats and lean proteins you will improve the quality of your life and prevent many of the killers of our time.
