Get Your Groove Back in 2011

Groove     Many of us wonder why we just don't feel as well as we should. We could use a few extra hours of sleep and seem to be on autopilot going through our days like a robot, sleeping, waking, eating, showering and working. We do it all over again the next day. We may feel more irritable than usual and tend to over react to situations that would normally not bother us.

What can be blocking us from feeling that "joie de vivre" that we once had? There can be many explanations according to our particular circumstances but here are a few:

 Adrenal Fatigue

The adrenal glands are a hormonal gland that sits on top of our kidneys that control our stress hormones like adrenal, noradrenaline and cortisol. Signs of adrenal fatigue include an unrefreshing sleep, afternoon fatigue, sugar and coffee cravings, feelings of irritability and mood swings in response to things that would normally not affect you.

Adrenal fatigue is thought to be caused by poor diet, long term stress, medications like steroids or hormonal imbalance. Natural treatments for adrenal fatigue include stress management and reducing caffeine intake. Supplements that support the adrenal glands are vitamin B complex, rhodiola, licorice tea, ribes nigrum (black currant bud) or adrenal extract. These substances have been used to help nourish the adrenal and help support its function. If you have an underlying disorder or unsure if you do have adrenal fatigue seek the help of a professional.

Poor Diet

Your Mother called and she wants you to eat your vegetables. Kidding aside, diet is really important for our physical and emotional well being. Here is a quick list of foods to avoid:

  1. Refined foods (such as white flour, white rice, sugar) are high glycemic foods that flip into sugar quickly in the blood and cause an imbalance in blood sugar and also leads to ill health due its poor nutritional content.
  2. High fat foods such as deep fried, trans fats, lard, saturated animal fats contribute to inflammation and heart disease.
  3. Drink no more than than three to five alcoholic drinks per week.
  4. Avoid fruit juices and soda pop because they are mostly empty calories.
  5. Steer clear of prepackaged foods as they are usually high fat, carbohydrate and/or full of salt and preservatives.

Here is what your diet should focus on:

  1. Choose whole grains such as brown rice, whole wheat, slow cooking oats, rye, quinoa or bulgur.
  2. Eat half of your daily food intake in the form of fruits and vegetables and get a wide variety of fresh produce (fresh or flash frozen vegetables are better than canned and next best to fresh.)
  3. Choose lean proteins such as wild game, poultry, fish and legumes. If you do eat red meat try and choose lean cuts.
  4. Choose healthy fats like nuts and oils like olive, grapeseed or coconut.
  5. Drink filtered water, green tea and organic coffee (in moderation)

Lack of Exercise

  • According to a recent study, regular daily exercise of walking a half an hour per day has been shown to be equivalent to Prozac in those with mild depression.
  • Exercise releases endorphins, feel good hormones, that give us energy and relieve pain.
  • Regular daily exercise helps us to break up our routine. It is good for our soul to have a daily walk or ski along nature trail or outdoors. Plus we get extra vitamin D from the sun.

Time for a Detox

If our organs of elimination such as our liver, intestinal tract, kidneys and lymphatics are not working at their peak we feel more sluggish than usual. If we retain toxins it can impede our elimination, energy and block our ability to adequately remove more impurities from our body. Signs that we need to do a detox are chronic headaches, fatigue, acne, coated tongue, aches and pains. By supporting our organs of elimination and helping them to excrete toxins we can improve our absorption of nutrients and removal of waste.

Check with the clinic if doing a detox if right for your particular needs.

Ill Health

Many diseases such as arthritis, insomnia, depression, hypothyroidism, chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia can lead to a lack of energy to enjoy life to it's fullest . If you have been diagnosed with any of these conditions alternative medicine can help. If you take any prescriptions for your disease seek the help of a professional to guide you through a natural regime.

Lack of Resources and Planning

Some of us need to add some structured time for fun into our busy schedule, learn it is okay to say "no" to work and "yes" to play. We can always delegate to relieve yourself of some of your duties so you can spend time doing something interesting. People with children can teach them how to help out with daily duties. Extra hands makes for less work. We may have forgotten what we like to do because it has been so long since we had an opportunity to enjoy ourselves.

If you do not have the finances to take a vacation or join a hobby you must pay for, why not make up your own trip or hobby? If you have friends in the city or with a cottage, ask if you can visit. Plan nice outings at surrounding parks or trails. Start your own hobby group, like a pot luck lunch, each person can bring different tools that your group can share.

Do things that make you feel good. If you had ever had a talent or passion when you were younger why not try your hand at it again? You may have loved softball, soccer, painting, dancing or even reading.

When we realize that the meaning of life is not the prize at the end of the efforts but our experience along the way we will shift our focus on what is called "present time consciousness". This always helps us to enjoy life and the here and now.

In natural medicine many people speak about high dietary protein intake as a cause for a loss of bone density and osteoporosis. An interesting study of 615 people found that there was no dietary correlation. In hindsight, a more acid based diet, that doesn't focus on lots of fresh fruits and vegetables may cause the body to buffer the blood by drawing minerals from the bones. However, this is yet to be seen. Weight bearing exercises and a medium to larger body frame seems to be protective for osteoporosis. Some medications cause bone loss such as antacids and antidepressant medications. In the clinic, we typically recommend a healthy modified mediterranian diet, supplements to correct any nutritional imbalances and homeopathic remedies to help enhance bone remineralization. Another study finds that protein intake helps synergistically with calcium stores in the skeletal system. Those who seriously restrict protein intake such as vegans may be at higher risk of osteoporosis. Those who are lacto ovo vegetarian may benefit because longevity studies show that lacto-ovo vegetarians tend to live longer, have less incidence of cancer, heart disease, obesity and bone loss.

One of the most used pharmaceutical drugs is antacids. Once people are put on them, they often don't go off them. Long term use of antacids are linked to low levels of calcium and magnesium, B12, folic acid and iron. It is also linked to osteoporosis and increased risk of fractures. This is likely due to poor assimilation of nutrients due to buffering the stomach acid. One deadly risk of antacid use is the infection C. Difficile. This bug is often contracted after antibiotic use and in hospitals. Homeopathy is a natural medicine that is suited to one's symptoms. Each person with high acidity, may be recommended a different product. Here is the details of a very popular homeopathic remedy NATRUM PHOS, that highlights how individualized the symptoms are:

  • Suited to symptoms related to excess acidity and lactic acid from too much sugar consumption
  • The belching can be sour and have a taste
  • The tongue may be coated, creamy, yellow on the roof of the back of the mouth and tongue.
  • Sensation of a lump in the throat
  • Flatulence with sour risings and vomiting
  • Greenish diarrhea
  • Trouble swallowing

As one can see homeopathic remedies are very individualized. If you have an acidic stomach, please contact the clinic on how we can help you. #carusoclinic #homeopathyrocks #guelphhomeopath    Read on

Despite complaints from those who believe that all people must seek healthcare from the pharmaceutical and medical model, University of Toronto, has listened to its staff and students who are asking for choice in their healthcare. Homeopathy is now covered under their insurance plan. Being a U of T graduate with a science degree and homeopath, I don't feel this tarnishes their reputation in any way. There are healthy and effective ways to deal with health issues that are not related to using pharmaceuticals and surgery. It shows that U of T respects people's freedom of choice in healthcare and U of T, and allows them to make decisions that are right for themselves and family. Read on

Did you know that natural medicine can help migraines? Contact us we can help.
Did you know that people with migraines:
Have blood vessels that don't dilate as well
Have lower levels of nitrites in blood vessels, which means you make less nitric oxide, which dilates vessels for proper blood flow.
Higher cardiovascular risks are seen in those with migraines:
1. 2 times more strokes are seen in people with migraines
2. Women who take oral contraceptives and have migraines, have a 9 times higher risk for stroke.
3. JAMA reported women with migraines and aura are 2 times more likely to suffer from a stroke, heart attacks, angina, risk of cardiovascular deaths.
4. Another study of 20,000 men reported in the Archives of Internal Medicine reported that men with migraines, (aura or no aura) are 42 times more likely to suffer a heart attack.

People who have migraines often suffer from food allergies to gluten, sugar, aspartame, MSG, food dyes and/or citrus. Often people who have migraines have blood sugar instability as well. Dietary interventions help a lot in these cases.

Some people with migraines are helped by improving nutritional deficiencies. Each person needs to be assessed for their unique needs but often people who have migraines are low in magnesium, b vitamins, omega 3 fatty acids, greens, vitamin K and GLA. Homeopathic remedies are tailored to the individual but some folks respond well to remedies like belladonna, gloinium, sanguinaria, kali phos, aconite, bryonia and nux vomica.
