The Caruso Homeopathy Blog

For some reason this nobel prize winner, has a lot to say about homeopathy. In my humble opinion a lot of people have a lot to say about a lot of things that they are not qualifed to comment on. Read some rebuttals in the news to these comments CLICK HERE also enjoy my diagram below!

Osteoporosis is a disease characterized by a decreased bone density that leads to brittle bones and increased fractures. For a complete explanation click here to view a video on osteoporosis. Despite the abundance of calcium available in North American diets, society is suffering from this disease more so then less industrialized societies. Many assume that osteoporosis if from a lack of calcium in the diet. However, many countries that do not consume calcium rich dairy products do not suffer from the osteoporosis that North Americans do. One theory about bone loss is that when people have an acidic terrain due to dietary influences (eating too many acidic foods such as sugar, alcohol, grains, meat, dairy and legumes) and too little alkaline foods (fruits and vegetables) the body will leach minerals from the bones to maintain a normal pH (acid balance). This may explain why people who eat a poor diet tend to suffer from osteoporosis. However there are other correlations to brittle bones such as:

  • Being a slight frame, underweight with low body fat percentage
  • Certain medications such as glucocorticoids (humulog, cortisone, prednisone), antacids (proton pump inhibitors), seizure medications (barbiturates, dilantin, phenobarbitol), pain medicine (oxycodone, codeine, morphine, methadone) and diabetic medications
  • Certain diseases such as hyperparathyroidism, hypothyroidism, alcoholism, rheumatoid arthritis, anorexia nervosa, kidney and liver disease
  • Having gastric bypass surgery
  • A lack of calcium, magnesium and vitamin D in the diet
  • Smoking is linked to a 230% increase in spinal osteoporosis in men and a 19% increase in bone fractures
  • A sedentary lifestyle or being bed ridden

What can you do to help yourself if you have osteopenia or osteoporosis?

  • Eat a healthy diet with at least 50% of your food intake in the form of fruit and vegetables. Choose whole grains, lean protein and legumes. Dairy products such as plain yogurt are an excellent source of calcium and protein. Limit caffeine because it leaches minerals. Avoid refined carbohydrates, sugar and drinking more than two glasses of alcohol per day.

  • Get some exercise daily. Weight bearing exercises are a good to help with bone density. Check with your doctor before starting an exercise regime.

  • Improve your digestion and stomach acid. Calcium is one of the harder minerals to digest and absorb so ensuring the stomach acid is adequate helps considerably. Consider taking a digestive enzyme.

  • Take a calcium supplement that includes two parts calcium, one part magnesium and vitamin D. Certain forms of calcium are easier to assimilate, such as calcium citrate or calcium hydroxyapatite.

  • Quit smoking

Food Sources of Calcium

What food sources are good for calcium?

  • Yogurt, Milk, Cheese
  • Artichoke
  • Collards
  • Turnip greens
  • Navy and pinto beans
  • Calcium fortified orange juice
  • Sesame seeds
  • Almonds
  • Sardines bones included
  • Salmon bones included
  • Tofu and Soya milk

Many know that dairy products are quite high in calcium but have trouble digesting them. For a list of common dairy and non-dairy foods and their calcium content click here

Nails are a marker for health. They are composed mostly of the protein keratin. Healthy nail beds are pink and nail disorders can be an indicator for health issues in both the nails of the fingers and the toes. Simple grooming practices can improve the condition of dry and brittle nails. Always cut your nails after they have soaked to prevent further cracking. Use nail polish remover as little as possible or choose a non drying variety. Keep your nails no longer than a quarter inch long because longer nails are more apt to break. Apply hand cream to your hands and nails each time you wash them.

Some nutritional deficiencies are linked to poor nail health such as:

  • a lack of protein, folic acid and vitamin C leads to hangnails
  • a B vitamin deficit can cause fragile nails and a tendency to horizontal ridges
  • low digestive juices such as hydrochloric acid leads to breaking and chipping nails
  • a lack of B12 can cause dryness and curved nails
  • low beneficial flora (acidophilus and bifidobacteria) can lead to fungal growth under and around the nails
  • an iron deficiency can cause spoon or concave shaped nails
  • a lack of zinc can cause white spots on the nails

Problems can range from thickness, discoloration, horizontal ridges, brittle, peeling nails and fungal infections. What is going on in the inside reflects on the outside. "As within so without" some wise person once said.

Brittle and Peeling Nails

Brittle and peeling nails are an issue for many. As people age our nails become drier and may crack and break easier. Those who have low thyroid levels and hormone deficiencies tend to suffer more with this condition. It can also be an occupation hazard for those who have to wash their hands frequently. Applying moisturizer to the hands and nails each time one washes them or does the dishes can help prevent breaking. Some nutritional deficiencies contribute to this problem as mentioned above. A lack of protein, B vitamins and low digestive juices can contribute to weak nails. Some supplements that help to improve the strength of nails and improve keratin production are B complex, Silica or horsetail extract, black currant seed oil (contains GLA which is great for skin, hair and nails) and calcium and magnesium.

Fungal Infections

Typically the toenails suffer from fungal infections. Those tend to suffer from toenail fungal infections are the elderly, diabetics, those who eat a diet rich in sugar and refined carbohydrates and those who have had toe injuries that damage the nail bed. Fungal infections can be spread so if someone in your family has a toenail fungus be sure to disinfect your shower area and clean your feet after swimming. Symptoms of toenail fungus are thickened, discolored and brittle nails. This condition can be very difficult to treat naturally and with drugs. It is a tenacious condition that requires much patience. One home remedy that has worked for many is simply applying vick’s vapour rub on the nails twice a day. Natural remedies include capryllic acid, probiotics, grape fruit seed extract, olive leaf extract, undecyclic acid and thyme.

Nail Shapes

Curved nails where the nail curves in the right direction but excessively can indicate a heart or lung condition. When the nails are curved up like a spoon it can indicate an iron deficiency or a fungus. Nails that are ridged vertically indicate stress, infections, nutritional imbalance, heart disease or major illness. Thick nails can be related to thyroid conditions, nail bed injuries or fungus. Ridges that run up and down the nail can be an indicator for a tendency to develop arthritis. Dented or pitted looking nails may be found in those with psoriasis or a protein deficiency.

Nail Colour

Yellow nails may be a result of nail polish, fungal infections or disorders of the lymphatic, respiratory or hepatic system. Black nails are a result of injury or fungal forms. A dark blue line in fair skinned people may be an indicator of melanoma. Greenish coloured nails is a sign of a bacterial infection or fungus. White spots on the nails may be a result of a zinc deficiency or injury. When the nail bed is missing the moon it can be a sign of lupus or autoimmune disease. Dark nail beds are a sign of poor circulation, heart disease or shock.

Many people only think of blood sugar in reference to diabetes or hypoglycemia. The incidence of diabetes has risen year after year due to our quick fix food choices. Diabetes in itself is correlated to other diseases such as heart disease, cancer (colon, breast and prostate), blindness, amputations, neuropathy, obesity, pms, kidney disease, arthritis, kidney and gallstones to name a few. However, many of us have fluctuations in our blood sugar that can cause lasting effects on the quality of our health and life. Metabolic syndrome is a term that indicates blood sugar instability without having diabetic readings on a blood test. Some indicators for metabolic syndrome are:

  • apple shaped obesity, large mid section
  • high cholesterol
  • kidney or gallstones
  • hypertension
  • overweight

Controlling blood sugar involves eating foods that are low glycemic. They are foods like whole grains, vegetables, fruits, lean proteins and healthy fats. High glycemic foods are those that flip into a sugar quickly in the blood. They are foods like white flour, sugar, white rice and other refined carbohydrates. Many prepackaged foods are high glycemic, contain trans fats, salt and preservatives. Studies have shown that those who eat a diet that focuses on lower glycemic foods and are rich in fruits, vegetables, fish and healthy oils like nuts and olive oil have less incidence of heart disease, cancer, diabetes and enjoy increased longevity. Studies have shown that people who eat a diet high in red meat, saturated and trans fat and refined carbohydrates tend to suffer more from hormonal imbalance, obesity, fatty liver, cancer and heart disease.

Changing ones diet is one of the most difficult things for people to do. However, with perseverance in making some simple changes to your diet by eating many fruits and vegetables, whole grains, healthy fats and lean proteins you will improve the quality of your life and prevent many of the killers of our time. For more information on how to eat well for health, refer to my book called "Your Drug Free Guide to Healthy Weight Loss".

Exercise helps to counter the affects of stress. We are made to move and many of us are glued to our desk chairs or our couches. A new study in "Psychoneuroendocrinology" researched the effects of fitness and aging on the HPA axis. They compared three groups, a young unfit group (age 25-30), older unfit (age 64-67) and an older fit (64-68) by exposing them to a battery of stress producing events. Cortisol levels did rise in all three groups, the older unfit group had the most significant increase. Therefore a higher level of aerobic fitness in the older groups may modify neuroendocrine changes we suffer from as we age. Not only that, exercise is a nice stress reliever when one can take time for themselves, enjoy a nature walk or a nice swim. Gentle exercises such as Tai Chi and yoga has been found to increase feelings of relaxation as well.

Meditation and relaxation have been  shown effective in reducing stress levels and improving mental clarity in those who practice it daily. Another article in the journal "Psychoneuroendocrinology" found that those who practice meditation have lower than average cortisol levels than those who do not.

A healthy diet  is a must for good health. Eating low glycemic foods, such as whole grains, plenty of fruits and vegetables and choosing lean proteins such as turkey, chicken and fish can help keep us healthy. Limit the use of sugar, alcohol and caffeinated drinks such as coffee and tea. Drink licorice tea because it is nourishing to the adrenal glands. Being obese or overweight can impact our stress hormones too because enlarged fat cells release a hormone cascade that talks to our glands. Not only does high cortisol cause weight gain but being overweight can alter our hormonal expression as well. All the more reason to be proactive and maintain a healthy weight.

Supplements can help with stress. Please check with your doctor of health care practitioner if you suffer from any underlying condition or are taking prescription medications. Many people take hormone and mood altering drugs but it may not be necessary and can be harmful due to their long term side effects. If you are healthy and do not take any other medications you may want to look at the following remedies:

*Vitamin C: 500 to 1000mgs per day, helps maintain a healthy immune system and decrease cortisol.
*Vitamin B Complex: B vitamins such as B5 are supportive of adrenal function, B6 is good for the immune system and hormones and B12 is useful for the nervous system and helps us to make digestive enzymes.
*Fish oil: is an excellent brain food, good for mood, depression and also beneficial for preventing heart disease and reducing pain from inflammation.
*Magnesium glycinate: a good form of magnesium that helps with relaxation for a better sleep and nervous system.
*Phosphatidylserine: is a supplement that is made from healthy fats, that are similar to the fats that line the cells in our brain. It has been shown to blunt cortisol levels in stressful situations and is also good for those with trouble focusing and concentrating.
*Ashwagandha: a herb called indian ginseng has amazing adaptogenic powers by reducing stress levels and accoring to the Life Extension Foundation has been found to have some anti-cancer activity.
*Rhodiola is a herb that is useful for stress and helps to improve exercise endurance.

10 Days to A Cleaner More Efficient You!

Ancient traditions and North American Indians have historically engaged in detoxification or purification rituals at every change of season to help improve the health of the body and mind. It is no wonder that this tradition lives on with many health conscious people due to its rejuvenating properties. Herein is a quick questionnaire to determine if you you need to detox.

Do you have any of the following symptoms? Please answer yes or no.

Headaches ______ Insomnia _______ Dizziness_____

Dark Circles under eyes_____ Itchy ears _______

Ringing in ears ______ Excessive Mucous ______ Sinus trouble_____

Hoarseness_____ Canker sores_____ Hives_____ Acne_____

Chest congestion_____ Sleepiness_____ Mood swings _____

Irritable_____ Binge eating_____ Overweight_____ Diarrhea _____

Bloating_____ Constipation_____ Heartburn_____ Coated tongue______

Unrefreshed Sleep_____ Use of aspirin and pain killers______

Fibromyalgia symptoms or muscle aches_____

Use of birth control pills_____ PMS _____

Key: If you answered yes to any of the following you may need to detoxify your body for it to run at its peak efficiancy.

Our society is exposed to more toxins in our environment than ever. In the past heavy metals were our main concern, now children are showing up with pesticides and plastic chemical compounds in their systems. Many of us just don't feel as well as we should. There is a reason that many stars such as Demi Moore and Gyneth Paltrow like to do periodic detox diets to stay slim and feel great.

Much research has found that environmental toxins are hazardous to our health. Each year 4 billion pounds of chemicals are released into our environment in the form of chemicals and pollutants from plastics, pesticides, heavy metals, and other sources. We are exposed to them in our water, air, soil, food and dust every day. Over time a build up of these toxins will affect the quality of our life in certain ways, such as in the symptoms listed above.

There are ways to stimulate your body to clear out these toxins and help you feel energized and great while doing so. Typical organs of elimination are the liver, kidneys, intestinal tract, skin and lymph. Think of it as a spring cleaning for your body to get your system jazzed up and ready to work at its peak efficiency. Not all detox programs are healthy; your body needs key nutrients and support to release toxins, so water fasting or juicing is not the right way to go. Many people try and detox and do not support the different phases of detoxification and just allow toxins into the blood stream and feel worse than when they started.

We have an exciting new program at the clinic. It is a 10 day cleanse that supports your body in detoxing by using targeted nutrition that aids your organs in excreting toxins. Our program includes a clean protein, phytonutrients, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. It outlines a "clean eating" plan and gentle exercises. At the end of the 10 day program you will lose weight, feel energized, have fewer aches and pains, have a more stable mood, and have clearer eyes, skin and tongue. For more information contact us at the clinic regarding our detox package.

The Flu and Immune System Facts and Fiction

I was at a seminar on the weekend that re-affirmed my beliefs about the damage we inadvertently do to our immune system through a variety of “well meaning” assaults. Ask yourself the following: When you get sick do you get a fever? How often do you get a cold or flu? Your answers will tell you the strength of your immune system.

Did you know that those who respond to illness with a high fever actually have a great immune system? It turns up the heat and boils up germs and recovery is swift. Those who get a mild fever are sick longer and illnesses such as a dry cough, post nasal drip or sinus congestion can linger. The problem lies in both a person’s genetic predisposition and what people have had passed down to them. Also another problem lies in medical suppression via over treatment of minor illnesses through the use of antibiotics, using vaccinations and other drugs. When we use antibiotics we don't allow our body to fight the bug on its own. We also deplete our good flora that keeps our immune system happy. Also we will use Tylenol to drop a fever when it is doing a good job in boiling those germs. This makes the illness linger longer. Our society vaccinates against bugs that are not always dangerous and we think we are doing ourselves a good turn, yet we are mutating these bugs, weakening our immune systems and exposing ourselves to the toxic preservatives in vaccines.

People who claim they never get a cold or flu bug usually are not healthy. Those who get them one to two times a year are normal. According to homeopathic literature, those who do not get colds are actually not well. Their body is usually working on a deeper pathology. Those who get sick often are in another category. Never getting sick is not a good sign. One may notice that people who get cancer say they have never even had a cold or those with rheumatoid arthritis may say they haven’t been sick in years. The immune system has been suppressed and the body’s vital force is now working on a deeper pathology. Does this mean you should start licking doorknobs to get a cold? No! What it means is the following:

  1. Having a cold or virus one to two times a year is normal. It is actually a sign your body has the ability to fight off bugs.
  2. Spiking a fever when you are sick is normal too, and healthy as long as it doesn’t go too high which is quite rare.
  3. Do not take Tylenol or Aspirin to suppress a fever unless directed to by your doctor because it will prolong your illness or cause Reye’s Syndrome.
  4. Take a day or two off to recover. Half of our society’s problem is that they won’t allow themselves the time to recover and decrease their stress load.
  5. Have your case taken by your Homeopath to help restore a normal functioning immune system and remove suppressive barriers to health.
  6. Eat a healthy diet, rich in fruits, veggies, whole grains and lean protein. Do not consume sugar, refined carbohydrates and limit alcohol as it depresses the immune system.
  7. Take a high quality probiotic to get your good/beneficial bacteria high if you have taken antibiotics. Antibiotics wipe out the beneficial flora in our gut which protects us from pathological microbes. Probiotics boost the immune system and displace bad bacteria in the gut. 60 to 80 percent of the immune system is found in the gut’s lymphatic system.
  8. Take vitamin D3, 1,000 to 2,000 IU per day. It has been shown to be beneficial to the immune system, prevents cancer and autoimmune diseases.
  9. When you are sick with a bug, call this office for a natural treatment and use antibiotics only as a last resort.

How many of us get sick with a cough or cold and think, "Wow I cannot take a day off work for this?". Yet that is what our body needs to heal itself? Heal yourself naturally by using non suppressive treatments that support your immune system not suppress it.

Do you want to live to 100?

Anti-Aging Strategies for Today's Toxic World

Did you know there are certain areas of the world where people live beyond the age of 100? These groups of people are from areas in countries such as Italy, Japan and California. These groups have been studied and some commonalities exist between them. There has been quite a lot of research in the life extension field. Who wouldn't want to live to 100 if they were in good health?

Here is what the research is saying about people who live to 100.

  1. They eat low glycemic foods, lean meats or vegetarian diets. Foods that flip into a sugar quickly in the blood are high glycemic and these foods contribute to diseases such as heart disease, diabetes and cancer. For information on healthy diet and eating, please refer to my book, Your Drug Free Guide to Healthy Weight Loss
  2. They work everyday physically and do not retire.
  3. They have strong community or family ties.
  4. They eat plenty of seasonal fresh vegetables and fruits.
  5. They drink red wine in moderation daily.
  6. They keep their mind active by reading, doing puzzles, learning new things and doing brain teasers.

People who are serious about living a long and healthy life should remember this age old saying "do everything in moderation". Keep up your social connections, stay physically and mentally active to increase your life span. Many people desire to live to 100 but only if they have good health and their mental faculties in tact.

We want you to be healthy and fit for all of your days. As mentioned earlier we believe prevention should be an integral part of your health and longevity plan. Doing our live cell testing or darkfield microscopy test is a good way to determine your nutritional weaknesses. It tests the following:

  • nutrients such as B12, folic acid, essential fatty acids
  • digestive markers like poor digestion of fats or proteins
  • health markers such as antioxidant state
  • acidic pH
  • liver stress
  • bowel health and immune system function flora imbalances
  • cardiovascular markers.

Fall Allergies are in Full Force

Fall allergies are out in North America and many of us will suffer until the first frost. Luckily there are some supplements and homeopathic remedies that should reduce symptoms of allergies. Check with your doctor or homeopath if you are taking other medications when you take supplements. Homeopathic remedies don’t conflict with any medications or conditions and are safe and gentle for any age. However, homeopathics should be taken a half hour before or after food one or two times a day as needed. Here are a few helpful supplements for allergy relief this season:

  • Urtica Urens MT is a tincture made from stinging nettle leaf that contains carotenoids, vitamin C, vitamin E, calcium, potassium, and flavonoids such as quercetin and rutin. This herb has anti-inflammatory effects (Riehemann K et al 1999). Historically, nettle has been used as a diuretic and a blood purifier which clears uric acid from the blood. Nettle may be beneficial for the treatment of allergic rhinitis, possibly because of the quercetin content (Blumenthal M 1998).
  • Quercitin is a flavonoid found in red wine and green tea. It has been studied for its ability to reduce the symptoms of allergies. Studies have shown that subjects with nasal allergies treated with a nasal spray that included quercetin, along with extract of Artemisia abrotanum L, experienced rapid and significant relief of nasal symptoms that was comparable to antihistamine preparations (Remberg P et al 2004). Also patients with nasal allergies found that quercetin was effective and safe without or in conjunction with conventional pharmaceuticals (Thornhill SM et al 2000).
  • AllerControl by AOR has a mixture of herbal remedies that have been found to significantly reduce allergic symptoms. Here is a list of the herbs it contains and their benefit as taken from AOR (
    • Perilla is a herb that contains many active ingredients, such as rosmarinic acid and luteolin. Oral supplementation with perilla leaves or extracts of rosmarinic acid has been shown to suppress allergic reactions (Takano H et al 2004). Rosmarinic acid relieves allergy symptoms by preventing the activation of immune responder cells and by inducing apoptosis, or cell death, in already activated immune responder cells (Hur YG et al 2004). Natural flavonoids like rosmarinic acid kill off excess allergy-activated immune cells while leaving the vast bulk of responder cells to fight off bacteria and other foreign invaders. Rosmarinic acid has been demonstrated to kill allergy-activated T cells and neutrophils without affecting the T cells or neutrophils in their resting state (Sanbongi C et al 2003). Perilla leaf extract and rosmarinic acid were found to be nearly equally effective at inhibiting the allergic response when given orally. A follow-up study confirmed that oral administration of perilla leaf extract inhibits production of tumor necrosis factor-alpha and attenuates the allergic response and inflammation in mice (Ueda H et al 2002).
    • Rosemary that contains rosmarinic acid inhibited interleukin-2 (IL-2) promoter activation of T cells (Won J et al 2003).
    • Rosmarinic acid had potent immunosuppressive effects and inhibited both the activation and proliferation of T cells (Yun SY et al 2003). Researchers demonstrated that daily treatment with rosmarinic acid in perilla leaf extract given orally to mice prevented allergic asthma caused by dust mite allergen. The study concluded that oral administration of perilla-derived rosmarinic acid may treat allergic asthma effectively by limiting cytokines and allergy-specific antibodies (Sanbongi C et al 2004).
    • Another study demonstrated that perilla leaf extract enriched with rosmarinic acid is effective among humans suffering from seasonal allergic symptoms (Takano H et al 2004). In this study, rosmarinic acid particularly inhibited the eye-related symptoms associated with seasonal allergies.
    • Like rosmarinic acid, luteolin is a natural plant flavonoid that may have potent antiallergic properties. It is found along with rosmarinic acid in various species of the perilla plant but at lower concentrations. In one study, luteolin was shown to be the most potent inhibitor of interleukin-4 (IL-4) production in certain immune cells. Okayama University researchers found that luteolin was the most potent inhibitor of histamine release from immune mast cells (Inoue T et al 2002). Oral administration of perilla leaf extract inhibited inflammation, allergic response, and tumor necrosis factor in mice (Ueda H et al 2002). Also, luteolin was documented to inhibit interleukin-5 (IL-5), which promotes the growth and survival of eosinophils, one particular type of leukocyte that is activated during allergies (Park KY et al 1999).

The following homeopathic remedies are useful for allergies. Not one size fits all in homeopathy, so if these do not suit you seek the help of a professional homeopath to find your fit. The following remedies are popular remedies for hay fever. Typical dosage is 6 to 30Ch potency, taken four pills one to three times a day as needed.

  • Allium Cepa is one of the most popular homeopathic remedies for allergies. Its symptoms include burning watery eyes and nose, feeling worse in the evening and in a warm room and a forehead headache.
  • Arundo is a remedy that covers the symptoms of itchy nostrils and palate. There is burning and itching seen.
  • Pollens 19 is a remedy that is a mixture of common allergens in North America. It is used to decrease symptoms of these allergens. It is typically taken once a week prior to allergy season to decrease sensitivities.
  • Sabadilla is a remedy that works on allergic symptoms that affect mostly the nose and tear ducts. These types are sensitive to cold, have spasmodic sneezing and runny nose. There is a pain in the nose with copious watery discharge.

Back to School; A Time for Focus

The school bell is ringing once again and many parents are happy to get their kids back into the routine of going to school. For some children focus is an issue that impedes their school performance, learning and social contacts. Many of us have heard of the disorder called “attention deficit hyperactivity disorder” or ADHD. I believe this condition is being over diagnosed which leads to "quick fix" prescription drugs rather than dSchool Kidsealing with the underlying problems or potential causes. Some symptoms of ADHD are lack of focus, impulsivity and hyperactivity. Many people with ADHD have overlapping disorders such as food allergies, depression and anxiety. There are a whole range of psychological factors that need a multi faceted approach to treatment.

Effective treatments range from proper placement in school, parental education, proper nutrition and further testing for things such as food sensitivities, heavy metal and microbial infections like candida or parasites. Prescription medications should be used as a last resort and with great caution due to their side effects and negative influences on a developing mind.

Each individual case of ADHD is unique. Not one cause has been found in ADHD cases. Preliminary research suggests some correlations with ADHD are as follows:

  • Researchers have found that some parents of children with ADHD symptoms tend to work more than a 40 hour week and live a fast paced lifestyle whereby the children do not get much one on one attention. They may not eat meals, read books, walk or play games together. (Note, I ponder if this is more related to the parent having ADHD and their choices rather than causing ADHD in the child.)
  • If a parent has ADHD, usually one or more of their children will have it too. Twins are found to have an 80% chance of having ADHD if their sibling has it. Environment can change the genetic expression of diseases.
  • There is a link between video games and television time and poor focus. Fast paced images that children become used to with today’s media may cause a child to lose interest in a regular paced environment such as in a classroom.
  • A lot of the ADHD children I see in the clinic eat primarily starchy carbohydrates with little protein, vegetables and fruit. These children may be so called “picky” eaters. Many families eat pre-packaged foods, high sugar, fat and carbohydrate content foods. Our children are heavier than they have ever have been. This is a result of our eating habits and exercise time. Make sure your child has a balance of proteins, carbohydrates and fats that is healthy with a focus on fruits, vegetables, lean protein (chicken, turkey, fish), whole grains (brown rice, quinoa, whole wheat or rye bread), yogurt (plain with added fruit is best) and healthy fats (nuts, if they aren’t allergic, olive oil and coconut oil for cooking). Eating healthy should be a family affair and an act of solidarity. It not only sets a good example, but improves everyone’s health and it seems less like punishment for the child if the child is the only one eating "differently".
  • Kids who get a 20 minute walk in nature tend to have better focus than those who walk in the city according to a study published in the Journal of Attention Disorders. This tells us that our environment is important. People are not made to sit indoors. What was even more interesting about this study is that they found these small nature walks are equally as effective as medication.
  • Other issues to consider are food allergies, microbial infections (such as parasites and candida) and heavy metal toxicity. These can be ruled out with further investigation in the clinic.

Supplements that are useful for ADHD are many. As mentioned above a personalized assessment may be worthwhile for your child to wade through some of them. Some supplements that are helpful are fish oil, zinc, magnesium and vitamin B complex. It is wise to think twice about putting your child onto prescription drugs. Try and get to the bottom of the issue naturally. Making a few positive changes such as dietary, school settings, outdoor time and starting on a natural regime will help with many cases of ADHD. We have a fall package for initial consultations for ADHD or autistic children. See the right hand side of this newsletter for the FOCUS package and for more information.

Arthritis of the Knee and Slips and Falls

The knee is a delicate joint that can easily be damaged with slips and falls. The knee is usually a joint that is affected by arthritis due to wear, tear and inflammation because it is a weight bearing joint.

Ice can be quite slippery in the winter months and dangerous for those who are not steady on their feet. Aside from being conscientious by shovelling and salting your walkways, how can we help those who have taken a tumble and hurt their knee?

At the first sign of injury, start treatment with the homeopathic remedy arnica taken internally and topically. Arnica Montana 30CH is a great remedy for anyone's first aid kit because it is useful for any injuries, strains or sprains. Topical arnica cream can also help reduce localized swelling if the skin is not broken. Another remedy that is quite helpful in knee injuries is Bryonia Alba. It is given to those who have redness, tenderness and swelling of the knee. They feel irritated with the pain and don't want to be disturbed or moved. They feel worse moving around and better for cold compresses on the injury. In the clinic the homeopathic remedy called ligament is very useful in knee injuries. Typical dosage for homeopathic remedies is a 6CH or 30CH, taken every three to four hours inbetween meals. The pellets or drops go under the tongue and are left to dissolve there.

If the knee requires more support due to deeper injuries from tears in the ligament or tendon there are a few supplements that have been proven to regenerate the joint. Glucosamine and chondroitin are quite popular for joint health and readily found in health food stores. A professional formula called "Joint, Ligament, Tendon" used in the clinic has quite a few ingredients that are known to support healing of joints and menisces tears. Substances within this formula that are known to aid in pain relief and healing are as follows:

  • MSM is a sulphur based supplement that helps to restore elasticity to joints
  • Apres Flex Boswellia (bioavailable form of boswellia)
  • Cynatine FLX contains sulphur and cysteine which help to repair tissues and adds keratin for repair and growth of normal tissues.
  • Amino acids L proline, L arginine, L glycine help with tissue biosynthesis and cellular replication
  • Herbs such as spinach, european strawberry and enzogenol Monterry pine
  • Silicon and manganese are minerals that are used in the body to make collagen, keratin and other substances that aid in tissue repair.
  • Hyaluronic acid helps to restore the fluid in the joints that are helpful for ease of movement.

Thus for your first line of defense, keep a homeopathic first aid kit on hand. It may just help the injured joint heal enough so that further intervention is not required. If the knee problems persist try a supplement that helps to restore the ligament and reduces inflammation.

Breast Cancer, An Ounce of Prevention Is Worth A Pound of Cure

In Canada, it is estimated that one in nine women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime. It is one of the most common forms of cancer in women. One in four cases of cancer are diagnosed as breast cancer and it is estimated that 23,800 Canadian women will be diagnosed in 2013 alone. These statistics from the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation are frightening. Many of us have had a friend or relative who has suffered with breast cancer. It has touched all of us in some way.

Prevention is key for breast cancer. Doctors promote mammography screening as a tool for early detection. However, controversy surrounds the radiation exposure that varies from machine to machine and damage to breast tissue from both radiation and compression. Younger women with susceptibility to cancer may be more effected negatively by mammography techniques. Self breast exam is something women can do in the privacy of their own home. Some studies show positive results with thermography. Thermography detects temperature variations in targeted areas of the body. Cells that produce more heat are typically abnormal cells. Although it doesn't detect cancer cells or a tumour, it can detect abnormal heat patterns so one can be more proactive about their breast health. Another way to be proactive to protect yourself from breast cancer is to optimize your diet, hormones and elimination.

Dietary Prevention

Certain diets have been researched and found to have a positive impact on breast cancer. Some diets that have considerable research are found herein:

  • High fibre and low saturated and trans-fat diets seem to be inversely related to breast cancer. One study found that dietary fibre prevented breast cancer in pre-menopausal women but not post menopausal women. This finding is interesting because pre-menopausal women are exposed to more natural estrogen during their menstrual cycle and post menopausal women typically have lower amounts of fluctuating estrogen. Another study found a positive correlation to a high fibre and complex carbohydrate diet that included many fruits and vegetables with a lower breast cancer incidence. This study showed that dietary fibre had a protective effect likely due to the phytochemicals from fruits, vegetables, seeds and legumes such as lignans, flavonoids, isoflavones and glucosinalates. These compounds may help to reduce negative estrogen, increase natural anti-oxidants and protect women developing cancer. With this information in mind, it makes sense that a high fat diet (trans and saturated fats) and low veggie and fibre intake are linked to a higher incidence of breast cancer. Studies also found that obesity is correlated to an increase in many cancers, not just breast but pancreas, gastrointestinal and colon
  • Blood sugar seems to related to cancer development. The higher the blood sugar the higher the incidence of cancer. Some research shows that the sugaring of cells from high blood sugar and high glycemic foods cause oxidative damage to cells that cause them to become abnormal and create inflammation. Thus a low glycemic diet isprudent for cancer prevention. Low glycemic means that the food consumed turns more slowly into a sugar in our blood stream than a high glycemic one does. Typically high glycemic foods are white rice, white flour and sugar.
  • Pesticides carry a negative effect on the development of hormonal cancers because they are considered endocrine (hormone) disruptors and are called "xenoestrogens". These are negative estrogens our body is exposed to from outside sources. They can load our system with the wrong types of estrogen. Other sources of negative xenoestrogens are hormone replacement drugs, birth control pills, pesticides, recycled water, plastics (BPA, phthalates, DEHP), preservatives as well as many household, personal and toiletry products  since they containparabens and phthalates. Xenoestrogens are different from phytoestrogens since one is a negative estrogen and the other are plants that have estrogen effects. The term phytoestrogen leaves oncologists scratching their heads. They are unsure whether they help or hinder. Some studies confirm their protective effect agaisnt hormonal cancers and others not. Phytoestrogens contain compounds such as isoflavones, lignans and coumarins. Soy, flaxseed and beans all contain phytoestrogens. However, much research finds the intake of these foods actually decrease the incidence of breast cancer. One theory is that these foods are higher in fibre and remove negative estrogens. Another theory is that phytoestrogens occupy a spot in our estrogen receptors and thus block negative estrogens or xenoestrogens from entering. The Japanese consume much soy in edamame and miso and have a much lower cancer rate. It is important to choose a non genetically modified version of these foods and to consume them in their whole food form, not a fast food form for optimum health. There is a wise adage that states "everything in moderation".  If you have breast cancer consult with your health care practitioner.
  • Hormone replacement drugs (HRT)increase one's incidence of breast cancer. Three out of 100 breast cancer diagnosis are from HRT use. Using estrogen alone (without progesterone) increases the risk even more.
  • Organic produce is key in reducing one's exposure to toxic xenoestrogens from pesticides that effect our hormones negatively. Given the poor growing season in Canada and the availability of organic produce, when you have to choose only some foods as organic, be sure to do so for the one's that typically contain the most pesticides, called the dirty dozen. The clean 15 have less pesticide residues due to the structure of the plant and absorption.
  • Cruciferous vegetablessuch as broccoli, cabbage, rapini, Brussels sprouts, kale and Swiss chard contain glucosinalates that help prevent cancer in general especially breast, colon and prostate cancer. Many supplements have been made from broccoli and/or broccoli sprouts such as diidolylmethane (DIM), indol 3 carbinol (I3C), glucoraphanin and suphurophane. These products are anti-oxidants that aid in detoxification and hormone modulation which makes them excellent for cancer support.
  • Iodine rich foodshave been found to be quite beneficial for breast cancer support. Low iodine may be also linked to prostate, endometrial and ovarian cancer. Those with hypothyroidism have two times the risk for breast cancer and interestingly hypothyroidism may improve if low levels of iodine are corrected nutritionally. Fibrocystic breasts may be improved with this mineral as well. Interestingly a few studies on some sea vegetables find that it decreases cancer occurrence. Sea vegetables contain iodine, iron, folate, vitamin C and K as well as compounds such as fucoidins, sulfated polysaccarides, haloperoxidases and other anti-oxidant alkaloids. These substances help to control blood sugar, reduce oxidative damage, improve hormonal function and reduce the incidence of breast cancer. One product that contains two types of sea vegetables is called "InSea". This one works well for weight reduction, thyroid and cancer support.
  • Higher alcohol intakeis linked to an increase in breast cancer. Studies do not distinguish the type of alcohol consumed, thus it appears all alcohol increases the risk. Studies find that both menopausal and pre menopausal women are at risk for breast cancer. It appears that the aldehydes in alcohol deplete the vitamin folate and impair liver function. Folate helps the liver to detoxify estrogen. It is recommended that women do not drink more than one alcoholic beverage per day. If you do decide to imbibe, be sure to take a Vitamin B complex that includes folic acid afterwards to replenish your stores.

Improving Organs of Elimination

Further to the statement that alcohol inhibits the liver's ability to properly excrete estrogen, enhancing liver function by eating well, reducing alcohol, trans fats and increasing vegetables and water intake can help to protect one from breast cancer. Some people do a cleansing diet for 21 days, however in the clinic clients are recommended that they always choose whole foods. Cruciferous (see above for their health properties) and bitter vegetables (stimulate elimination, excretion and bile flow) such as dandelion, turnip and collard greens, garlic, onions and eggs (sulphur and choline compounds) help the liver to perform its function. Spices such as rosemary, cinnamon, turmeric are beneficial for the liver. Drink plenty of pure water. If you can invest in a water filtration system. Many now guarantee to filter out prescription drug waste that is recycled through our septic system into our drinking water such as antibiotics, HRT and birth control pills. Some people require additional liver support  by supporting both phase one (binding the toxin) and phase two (excreting the toxin) of detoxification. Those who have tried a liver cleanse and suffer from symptoms such as headaches, fatigue, irritability or digestive upset often haven't supported both phases of detoxification. Thus toxins  re-circulate instead of being eliminated cause symptoms.

Improving bowel movements helps the body to trap negative estrogens, toxins and aids in general health. Bowel function can be improved by choosing foods that have a higher fibre content, legumes (kidney, garbanzo, navy and black beans), fruits, vegetables and whole grains (such as quinoa, millet, teff, oats and rye). Healthy fats are beneficial and help keep the digestive tract lubricated. These fats are found in coconut, tree nuts, seeds, olive oil, avocados, flax and chia seeds. Drink plenty of clean water to flush toxins and aid in bowel movements. An online water calculator can help you to determine how much water to drink daily. Foods that increase constipation are dairy (especially cheese), white bread, rice and flour, sugar, high protein diets and a lack of healthy fats.

Lymph flow is imperative for healthy fats. The lymphatic system is a network of tissues that are comprised of the adenoids, tonsils, spleen, lymph vessels, lymph nodes and lymph. Its main function is to distribute fluid that contains white blood cells through the lymph. The lymphatic system also removes waste and toxins from the body. Improving lymph drainage in the armpit and breast helps to remove toxins and sends immune system cells to attack wild cells. Bras have been thought to seriously decrease lymph flow however, research has not yet to back that up. A book called "Dressed to Kill" incites curiousity on this issue. On the other hand, countries where bras are not used have much less breast cancer incidence. A simple method of improving lymph flow is to use Kneipp's method of alternating hot and cold shower or massage. There are many herbal combinations used to drain lymph that typically contain ceanthus, cleavers, burdock, phytolacca, prickly ash and lobelia.

Cortisol levels seem to be correlated to the development of breast cancer. Cortisol is a stress hormone that is involved in the flight or fight response, blood pressure, insulin, immune response and inflammatory response. People who have a stressed life can develop both very high cortisol levels or very low cortisol from long term stress. Those who have a flat dinural cortisol level, tend to not have a good survival rate after 7 years. Thus adrenal fatigue, a condition where the adrenals are unable to respond to challenges with a normal output of adrenal hormones is linked to a poor survival rate with regards to breast cancer. The adrenals are small glands that sit ontop of the kidneys. They put out adrenaline, noradrenaline, cortisol and glucocorticoids. Some signs of adrenal fatigue are:

  • cold hands and feet
  • inability to get moving in the morning
  • fatigue in the afternoon
  • sleepy after lunchtime
  • high stress levels, anxiety and depression
  • insomnia or excess sleeping
  • weight gain especially around the abdomen

The HPA axis is a feedback loop in the nervous system that controls the hormone output from the hypothalamus, pituitary and adrenal gland. In the clinic we recommend doing a few clinical tests to ascertain proper hormone output. Often people ask what these tests are compared to their family doctor's blood tests. The difference between the testing we do in clinic and the doctor's blood test is they are using a scale on their tests that detect pathology or disease. We are using a scale that detects variations in normal function to help ward off disease. If you have an abnormal adrenal gland with standard medical tests, you may have addison's or cushing's disease. With a cortisol test or adrenal function panel, it detects abnormal patterns in cortisol that can be altered proactively with supplementation, stress reduction and lifestyle intervention. One simple questionnaire we like to use in the clinic is the identi-stress questionnaire which detects abnormalities in the HPA axis.

There are a variety of supplements mentioned herein that are helpful for prevention of breast cancer. Each person is unique and should be treated as such. Some of the supplements mentioned are InSea, DIM, Lymph drainage and I3C. Other supplements which may be helpful are B vitamins, melatonin and calcium d glucarate. A healthy regime is best suited to one's individual needs. For an assessment, contact the clinic at 519 827 9237

Women have had to suffer with menstrual issues for eternity. Sometimes women naturally tend to have a heavier flow than others and sometimes the menses gets worse as they age. Each person is treated as an individual at the clinic and a full casetaking is done to assess a person's unique needs. Some causes of excessive bleeding are related to fibroids, endometriosis, faulty liver and high estrogen and/or a lack of progesterone. In the clinic we use a variety of techniques to dampen down excessive flow, one is liver support, another is a menstrual tea that contains shepphards purse, yarrow and raspberry leaf. There are also a variety of homeopathic remedies that help with excessive flow like:

  • Crocus, which has flow after over exertion, miscarriage or labour. The discharge is dark and stringy blood. These types may have a nervous temperment. A strange symptom is that they may feel as if something is alive in their abdomen.
  • Hamamelis is a useful remedy for protracted uterine hemorrhages that come from a loss of tone in the blood vessels of the uterus. Hemorrhages may occur after labour or an abortion/miscarriage. The blood may be dark, black clots with watery thin blood mixed in. The flow stops at night.
  • Sabina is a remedy that helps with flow that is profuse, bright red blood. Like Hamamelis there may be dark clotted blood mixed into a watery red flow. There may be a dragging pain in the uterus that extends to the back and loins.

As one can see homeopathic remedies are quite specific to the individual and suited to their nature. For more info on how we can help, please contact us, click here. #carusoclinic #homeopathyrocks #guelphhomeopath

Many people bring their children to the clinic with constipation issues. Typically we look at the diet first to see if there are any barriers to proper elimination. Usually in children that suffer from constipation who need a dietary corrections avoid eating vegetables and fruits, don't drink enough water or focus mostly on dairy products, white flour and refined sugars. Often simply altering the diet helps. However, some kids need further support with probiotics or homeopathy. Homeopathic remedies are suited to the individual's unique symptoms. For example, Calcarea Carb is a common remedy where the stools may be large and hard, similar to bryonia alba. Kids who need this remedy may also tend to be a bit chubby, sweat easily and have a good appetite. Bryonia on the other hand, had dry, large stools. They are very thirsty and seem to never be quenched. Lac Defloratum is a great little known remedy for constipation, with painful laceration of the rectum, hard large stools with great straining. There is a tendency to sick headaches, poor nutrition and car sickness. For more information on how homeopathy can help you with constipation, contact us. #carusoclinic #homeopathyrocks
